A “moderate” 4.8 earthquake shook Bay of Plenty residents early on Saturday morning.

The quake, centred 15km west of Te Kaha, hit at 5.46am, at a depth of 29 kilometres.

GeoNet received more than 290 felt reports, mostly from near the epicentre, but others from as far away as Wellington and Blenheim.

The tremor followed a strong 4.7 quake near Seddon on Saturday night, which was felt by more than 3000 people.
