Two people have died after a car and truck crashed on Monday morning in the North Island’s Central Plateau.

The crash happened on State Highway 4 near Erua, between Ohakune and National Park, shortly before 8am, police said.

The driver and a passenger in the car died.

State Highway 4 has been closed in the section between State Highway 49, near Ohakune, and State Highway 47, near National Park.

The crash was the second fatal accident on Monday morning. A person died after the car they were in hit a tree north of Christchurch the intersection of State Highway 7 and Hurunui Bluff Rd, shortly before 7.30am.
The crash came only hours after eight people were injured, six seriously, after a crash that blocked State Highway 1 on the Desert Road.

Two cars collided about 3pm on Sunday, approximately 5km north of the Tree Trunk Gorge Road intersection, south of Turangi.

Five people with serious injuries were flown to Waikato Hospital, a sixth seriously injured person was flown to Rotorua Hospital.

Two other people with moderate injuries were taken to Taupo Hospital in an ambulance.
