Swimmers sneaking into private thermal pools near Taupō could land themselves in hot water in more ways than one. The staff at Wairakei Terraces and Thermal Health Spa fear they will turn up to work one day to find someone injured by hot water.

Thefts and ‘break-ins’ have been happening since the pools opened in 2010, with most people just after a free dip in the terraced hot pools. The pools are thermally heated, with a scalding hot stream running through the property.

Breaches to safety protocols, unlawful access and a blatant disregard for property was of “paramount concern”, especially the extremely hot water.
