A shortage in Mexico of tequila’s main ingredient, agave, could end up costing Kiwis.

Limited stock of the spiky succulent is likely to last until at least 2021, Reuters reported, driving prices even higher in the premium tequila industry.

They have already risen close to 600 per cent over the past two years. The rise has lead to increased agave-related crimes – 15,000 plants were stolen last year.
