A record number of Kiwis tuned into the emotional documentary that followed Kiwi musician Stan Walker through his discovery of cancer and the removal of his stomach.

Stan aired on Sunday night with a rating of 8.6 and attracted 32.5 per cent of people in the commercially important demographic of viewers aged 25 to 54.

Numbers were large for the demographic rating of people aged 5+ and those aged between 18-49 as well, making it the most watched show on television in that time frame.

According to a Mediaworks spokesperson, Stan is the highest rating documentary of 2018 and the second-highest rating programme on television for the year-to-date.
