Skiers had to be lowered using ropes after a powercut on Canterbury’s Mt Hutt ski area.

Stranded on the main chairlift of the mountain, dozens of people were taken off the chairlift using ropes and many others evacuated as well.

Skiers and snowboarders were asked to reach behind the back of the seat and open the pod cap and read the instructions ahead of the evacuations.

A post on the Mt Hutt Facebook page said the power connection at Blackford Rd dropped at 11:16am on Sunday.
