‘Boob Beads’ are breast-shaped gold and silver beads designed by Pukekohe jeweller Kenny McArthur.
McArthur said the idea for the design came when he and his wife Ginny were having a coffee with longtime friend Vanessa Lowe in May last year, after Lowe had just been recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
“We were just having a coffee on a Sunday afternoon seeing how she was and [Lowe] just said jokingly ‘all the kids get a bead up at [Starship Hospital], I’d like a boob bead’.”
McArthur was taken by the idea.
McArthur gifted Lowe a bosom shaped prototype, “It was so touching,” said Lowe.
“It was just a funny joke really when it started and the fact that he went and away and quietly sort of worked on it and bought it to life is really just incredible.”
Forty per cent from the of the sale of each bead goes towards the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ.
