Te Korowai Roopu Tautoko inc were asked if they would be interested in adopting the initiative, Love Soup, that has been working in Tokoroa, Hibiscus Coast, Auckland, and Rotorua. They agreed and for the past four weeks, Te Korowai have been supplying food on a Wednesday for those in need in the Taupō community.

Half of the donations are taken to Turangi.

Those in need of food then turn up, fill out a basic form, and then fill their bags up and take them home – no questions are asked.

But what Te Korowai general manager, Cherie Darlington, wants is for the the local community to lend a hand.

“There is a huge need, a huge gap here in Taupō. We are wanting to reach out to the community businesses in hopes of getting them on board,” she said.

“We really want them to support the need.”

“We’ve written letters to bakerys and the supermarkets asking for their help. If we can provide an ongoing service, we will do that but we need help from the community.”

While Darlington knows there is a foodbank running in the community, she said it was not about competition.

“I think we can all work together to achieve a common goal – helping those in need.”

Anyone wanting to help out can phone 386 8965.
