The days of plastic bags at New World, Pak’n Save and Four Square are numbered.
December 31 is the last day the supermarket chain will offer plastic bags in any of its stores.
Steve Anderson, chief executive of Foodstuffs South Island, announced the decision to go plastic-free at the checkout back in August, saying: “The change in plastic bags, our work to improve and remove plastic packaging where appropriate, our leadership in soft plastics recycling and the ban on microbeads and plastic cotton buds – all add up to major changes in the way we look after New Zealand.”
A spokesperson said this week that Foodstuffs had given the public months to prepare for the change, but that it was good to remind everyone again.
A variety of reusable bags at different price points would be available to purchase.
