A single-use plastic bag sold for $52 after 47 bids in a tongue-in-cheek Trade Me auction on Tuesday night.

Seller Nairn Wilson, an 18-year-old plumber from Nelson, said he was “definitely surprised and pretty excited” by the response his auction got – and that he’d rushed out to buy a gold frame from K-Mart for the bag, along with bubble wrap to post it in.

The winning bidder, whose Trade Me username is kestrah123, was listed on the site as hailing from “Tokora/Putaruru”. Wilson confirmed they had been in email contact shortly after the auction closed.

Touted by Wilson as “a unique opportunity to acquire a piece of New Zealand history”, the now-discontinued Pak’n’Save plastic bag was added to more than 2,500 people’s Trade Me watchlists before being sold.
