Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced an immediate student support package to financially assist tertiary students to continue with their studies.

The domestic tertiary student package will increase the student loan amount available for course-related costs for full-time students from $1000 to $2000, on a temporary basis. The package will cost $35 million in operating funding and $98m in capital expenditure.

Support payments will continue for students unable to study on-line for up to eight weeks.

Technical changes will be made to ensure that where students receive partial tuition fee refunds in 2020 because their course has been discontinued due to Covid-19, it would not affect their future entitlement to student loans.

If a student was unable to complete a course of study in 2020 due to Covid-19, it would not affect their entitlement to Fees Free tertiary study.

Ardern said even if students were casual staff, they’re eligible for the wage subsidy.

Domestic students who were enrolled in full-time tertiary study could access the supports from Wednesday.
