YOUTH COUNCILLORS WANTED

Another year of Ruapehu Youth Council is upon us and they are looking for enthusiastic, driven, local youth between the ages of 12 and 24 years with a genuine passion for their community to become Ruapehu Youth Councillors for 2021.

Youth Council Coordinator Paige Tutemahurangi said that as well as having a lot of fun, becoming a Ruapehu Youth Councillor provides an amazing range of opportunities for local youth including developing their leadership, governance and public speaking skillset.

“Youth Ambassadors can expect to take part in some amazing events during year, meet great new people, and lead and contribute to meaningful projects, strategies and initiatives that will make a very real difference to the lives of young people in Ruapehu and the wider community,” she said.

“With 2021 being a ‘Long Term Plan’ year, and some very real issues affecting the future of our communities being made, the youth voice at the Council table is more important than ever.

Paige said that applications are open to all youth who reside within the Ruapehu District between the ages of 12 – 24, and can commit to attending one meeting per month.

In addition to these meetings, successful applicants can expect to learn from and engage with experts in leading issues such as climate change, waste management and ‘design thinking’, “we have an exciting program for our Youth Councillors this year”.

After being officially sworn in as a representative by the Mayor and the CEO, Youth Councillors also receive reimbursement for meeting attendance.

“If parents, caregivers, aunties or uncles or anyone else knows of a young person who has the right personal attributes and could benefit from being a Youth Councillor please encourage them to apply.

If you talk with any of the earlier Youth Councillors they will tell you it was one of the best things they ever did!

Applications forms will be available from local Council Offices, online at ruapehudc.govt.nz/our-council/youth-council or phone 07 895 8188

Applications close Monday 15 March 2021.
