Major change! As of April 3, 2026, the “meal requirement” for alcohol on Good Friday is gone. See how the new law affects your Easter weekend plans.
It’s the news hospitality owners—and thirsty Kiwis—have been waiting for. As of Friday, April 3, 2026 (Easter) , the rules around buying a drink or alcohol on restricted trading days have officially changed. Thanks to the passing of a new Amendment Act, the long-standing “dine-in” rule has been scrapped just in time for the long weekend.
Previously, you could only be served alcohol on Good Friday or Easter Sunday if you were on-site for a “substantial meal.” Under the new law, on-licence premises like your favorite local pub or the bars at Taupo DeBretts Spa Resort can now operate under their normal trading hours without forcing you to order a burger just to enjoy a pint. While off-licences (bottle stores) remain closed today, this is a massive win for the hospitality sector. If you’re heading out, just remember to check in with your local spot first, as some may still be operating under specific council-led Local Alcohol Policies!
