As of 8 am this morning (Thursday 17 March) the Manawatū-Whanganui District has returned to restricted fire season.
Fire and Emergency announced the restrictions come as a result of the current dry windy conditions. The restricted season covers all the Horowhenua, Palmerston North, Manawatū, Rangitikei, Ruapehu, and Whanganui District Council Areas.
District Manager Nigel Dravitzki said “The environment is rapidly drying out, leading to a very high-risk fire situation”
“This means fires could start and spread very easily if people aren’t careful or don’t follow our safety advice.
This week alone there have been two large vegetation fires across the Whanganui region.
Tuesday and Wednesday saw crews and helicopters fighting large fires on Denlair Rd followed by another vegetation fire on Whanganui River Rd. Both of these fires have been extinguished.
