Heads up, the online streaming service Netflix is cracking down on ‘account borrowers’ with the testing of a new feature that asks “Is this your account?”
The pop-up that’s being trialed says, “If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.”
A warning has been popping up, requesting users verify that it is their account with a verification code!
In 2016 Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said,
“Password sharing is something you have to learn to live with because there’s so much legitimate password sharing, like you sharing with your spouse, with your kids….so there’s no bright line, and we’re doing fine as is.”
With the rise in competing streaming platforms, it looks like Netflix is wanting to crack down on account sharers that aren’t in the same household so that those users have to have their own accounts to view content.
A spokesperson from Netflix told People,
“This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so,”
Luckily there has been no report of this feature on Screens in New Zealand as of yet.
Just a cheeky warning that if this feature arrives on our shores you might get booted of your Ex’s Netflix account that you’ve been using for the past 18 months
