Sir David Attenborough 100th Birthday: New Wasp Species Named

-

Scientists celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday by naming a new parasitic wasp after him.

How do you celebrate a century of life for the man who introduced the world to nature? Scientists have found the perfect gift for Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday: a brand-new genus of parasitic wasp.

Named Attenboroughnculus tau, this tiny 3.5mm creature was actually discovered in Chile back in 1983 but sat unidentified in the Natural History Museum until now. The “tau” in its name refers to a distinct T-shaped marking on its abdomen. It’s a fitting tribute, as Sir David famously brought “body-snatcher wasps” to our screens in The Trials of Life. While a wasp might not be everyone’s first choice for a namesake, Sir David is reportedly “chuffed” to join the elite group of creatures—from dinosaurs to plants—that carry his name.
