It’s a special part of the Central North Island, and now Taupō is officially New Zealand’s most beautiful large town!
The lakeside town took the title on Thursday night at the annual Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards. Mayor David Trewavas accepted the award via video link.
“It really is a team effort to keep Taupō beautiful and this award really showcases the hard work of both our council and the community in looking after the place we all love,” -Mayor David Trewavas
The awards are New Zealand’s longest-running sustainability awards and provide a benchmark for environmental excellence across the nation.
The KNZBA’s have been run annually since 1972. Designed to inspire, encourage, recognise and acknowledge individuals, schools, community groups, towns, and cities who are working tirelessly to keep not only their town but the nation beautiful.
Taupō last took the title 4 years ago in 2018. One resident took to social media saying “such fantastic news, love love this fabulous town,” whilst another said “Whoop whoop that’s because it’s paradise right here [in Taupō]”
