Fire and Emergency New Zealand and Whanganui Rural fire crews have been battling a vegetation fire near Fordell.
FENZ was notified of the fire on Denlair Rd just before 1.30 pm on Tuesday afternoon.
Central fire communications shift manager, Murray Dunbar said the fire started as a controlled burnoff that spread and lost control.
Fire and Emergency estimate the blaze to be 300m x 700m.
Last reports indicated that four appliances and a tanker were working on the ground, with a helicopter called in for additional support.
