Ski season kicks off July 4 on Mt Ruapehu. Get the latest opening day updates and pass deals for both Whakapapa and Tūroa.
Dust off your boards and wax your skis, because Mt Ruapehu is roaring back to life! While early winter sightseeing and the scenic gondolas kicked off on Whakapapa back on Kings Birthday Weekend, the date everyone has actually been waiting for is officially locked in: Saturday, July 4th marks the progressive launch of full skiing and snowboarding operations across the mountain.
Even though they share the same volcanic peak, the two sides of the maunga are being run by entirely separate companies this year—meaning the competition is on to see who can deliver the best winter experience.
What’s Dropping at Tūroa
Tūroa is building up the stoke in stages under its streamlined rebranding. Following early weekend openings at HQ Ohakune, July 4th will see a wider winter rollout, including:
-
The Alpine Meadow beginner area opening.
-
Sledding lanes and Snow School lessons officially commencing.
-
Rental services and Guest Services fully operating.
-
Après-ski updates: Both Alpine Cafe & Bar and Freddie’s Tasting Room will be open to help you warm up.
Local Pass Deal: Tūroa has launched its “Multiday Lift Pass” deals, letting you lock in 3-day consecutive passes starting from $329 for adults, giving you maximum flexibility to hit the slopes when the snow is prime.
What’s Happening at Whakapapa
Whakapapa’s new Snowland space is already hosting tubing and sledding under a single-ticket system, but July 4th is when the upper terrain opens for skiers and riders. Keep an eye out for a couple of key events coming to the slopes early in the season:
-
July 5th: Avalanche & Backcountry Education afternoon with BCA & Hillary Outdoors—perfect for sharpening up your mountain safety.
-
July 17th: The Happy Valley Rail Jam. For just a ten-dollar entry fee, riders of all ages can hit the rail and box lines to throw down their best tricks for prizes.
Local Pass Deal: Whakapapa has extended its early-bird season pass rates until June 30th ($799 for adults). If you missed that window, their mid-week first-timer packages are sitting at a solid $119, including your lift pass, gear rental, and a lesson.
Let’s hope the snow gods play ball over the next few days—see you up there!
