Justin Bieber complains his Grammy nominations were in the wrong category

Justin Bieber has penned an open letter to the Grammys in which he insists his Grammy nominations for his album Changes were in the wrong category.

Changes received four nods, mostly in the pop category, including Best Pop Solo Performance for Bieber’s hit track ‘Yummy’, and Best Pop Vocal Album.

The 26-year-old singer prefaced his Instagram post with a disclaimer that his thoughts were not meant to be taken as “ungrateful,” adding that he was “flattered to be acknowledged and appreciated for his artistry” before declaring being nominated in the pop category “feels weird”.

“I am very meticulous and intentional about my music. With that being said, I set out to make an R&B album. ‘Changes’ was and is an R&B album. It is not being acknowledged as an R&B album, which is very strange to me,” he wrote.

“I grew up admiring R&B music and wished to make a project that would embody that sound. For this not to be put into that category feels weird, considering from the chords to the melodies to the vocal style, all the way down to the hip-hop drums that were chosen, it is undeniably, unmistakably an R&B album!”

Bieber’s complaints come amid a long list of ‘surprise snubs’ for the 2021 Grammys, which sees ‘Blinding Lights’ chartopper The Weeknd shut out of any nominations, along with Selena Gomez. Her album Rare didn’t make the cut despite two hit singles, ‘Look at Her Now’ and ‘Lose You to Love Me’.

The Weeknd slammed the Grammys as “corrupt” on Twitter, declaring: “You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency…”
